About this spot
Suomenlinna island just outside Helsinki is a fascinating place to spend a day exploring. The very southern tip of the island contains a variety of old gun emplacements set amid bunkers and underground tunnels within the large fortress walls. The fortress dates from 1748 when the Swedish began construction. It continued to be expanded during the Russian years until Finland gained independence in 1917
