About This Spot

The Forno Hut was constructed in the year 1889 by the Alpine explorer Theodor Curtius and the famous mountain guide Christian Klucker. Klucker was the first hut warden.
In 1920, the hut was donated to the Rorschach Section of the SAC.
Later, the hut was extended and improved several times. Between 1985 and 2015, the Forno Hut had more than 100 sleeping places but the capacity was then reduced somewhat in the interests of greater comfort and convenience.

The Rifugio sits just above a massive glacier tongue at 2574 meters above sea level. The surrounding mountain define the border between Italy and Switzerland. The standard path will take you up the Forno Valley almost to the ice edge of the glacier, which is retreating at an average speed of 18 meters a year because of the global warming. From there you be ascending the glacier moraine up to the hut.
The panoramic route follows the path for the Muretto Pass, giving outstanding views over the valley below. Then it will go around Pizzo dei Rossi, you will be hitting some beautiful small glacial lakes. After the lakes the path starts being very steep, after a few kilometers you will find yourself above the Forno Valley headed to another blue lake, Laghetto del Forno, and eventually you will reach the hut

Keep in mind it is a a mountain hike, so be prepared for it. Bring warm clothes, water (there is water along the paths but I cannot guarantee it to drinking water) and waterproof booth and jackets.
It is possible to sleep at the rifugio, be sure to call for information.
It is also important to bring down to the parking lot all the trash and things you carried.
