The boardwalk is a 2.8 mi/4.5 km wooden-decked trail. It runs through bottomlands in the Congaree River floodplain. The ground below the boardwalk is mud that is 8'/2.4m deep. This rich soil is replenished by flooding. It supports one of the tallest deciduous forests in the world with an average tree height of 130'/39.6m. Some Loblolly Pines exceed 150'/45.7m.
