Lathkill Dale is a quiet dale in the White
Peak, running from the village of Monyash to Alport and is about 6 miles long. The upper part of the dale is a National Nature Reserve, hosting a variety of wild flowers, butterflies, trout and birds.
The river Lathkill is extremely clear, filtered by the limestone, and no example in the Peak District comes as close. However, there is now an initiative
in place to save the dale as often in summer months the river runs dry for a long stretch.
When the river is flowing, it emerges from
underground at Lathkill House Cave, just below Parson’s Tor and runs all the way to Haddon Hall where it meets the River Wye. As it takes its course, it winds through a variety of scenery.
