Kinder Scout is the highest point in the
Peak District at 636m high. According to the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000, it is technically a mountain at over 600m. Although, it is fair to say Kinder Scout doesn’t have the usual characteristics associated with a mountain. It is a large plateau with
almost nothing but groughs and peat bogs
in the middle. However, Kinder Scout is at
its best at the edges, as they are lined with
curious gritstone formations, weathered over millennia with excellent views to the valleys below. The gritstone formations are so unique that they make Kinder Scout an SSSI (Sites of Special Scientific Interest).
One of the best examples of this is at the Wool Packs just west of Crowden Head. This is a huge area littered with many fantastic gritstone formations, more than you could possibly count.
