The individual calf roping event is the event in which the teamwork between cowboy and horse is most evident. The cowboy lassos the calf from horseback and then ties off the rope to the saddle. The cowboy dismounts while the horse maintains a steady tension on the rope, moving with the calf. The cowboy must turn the calf over and tie three of the four legs together. Note the pink tie-down rope in the cowboys mouth. This is also called a piggin' string.

This is a saddle bronc ride. The rider holds on with his knees clenched under the sides of the pommel. Saddle broncs are bigger and heavier than bareback broncs, and are bred for strenghth and endurance as well as bucking ability.

More bareback bronc riding. Rodeo animals are specially bred for strenght, endurance and bucking ability. Bareback broncs are lighter and more active jumpers than saddle broncs.

Bull riding is known as the most dangerous eight seconds in sports. It is also one of the most popular events. The legs visible behind the bull belong to one of the bullfighters.

In barrel racing three barrels are placed in a triangle with sides of 105 ft/30 m and a base of 149 ft/45 m. The racers enter the arena at full speed and run a cloverleaf pattern around the barrels. The fastest time this day was 17.24 sec. Theoretically the total distance is 510 ft/155 m. In practice the travel lines curve and are longer. Barrel racing is one of the few women's events in rodeo. A good rodeo horse can cost up to $200,000 (USD).

In steer wrestling the rider drops from his horse and must wrestle the steer to the ground. The rider on the left is the hazer who keeps the steer traveling on a straight path.

In the Bareback Bronc riding event the riders hold onto a special grip attached to the riggin' which is the forward padded belt. The judges score both the horse's and the rider's performance for a total overall score.

Mutton Bustin' is a rodeo sport for children ages 4-6 years. The winner is the rider who travels the greatest distance on the sheep. There is a cash prize.

Rodeo bullfighters (also known as rodeo clowns) are the safety personnel for the riders. When riders are thrown or dismount, the rodeo animals are often aggressive. Here two rodeo bullfighters place themselves between an angry bull and the the rider who was just thrown.
