About this spot
Xunantunich is an ancient Mayan site located on a hill overlooking the Mopan River. It dates back to the classic period of Maya civilization, around 600-900 AD. Xunantunich is best known for its impressive main temple, known as El Castillo, which stands at over 130 feet tall and provides visitors with a stunning view of the surrounding area. The name Xunantunich means "Stone Woman", and the site is said to be haunted by the ghost of a woman who died there long ago. In addition to El Castillo, Xunantunich also features several other important structures, including plazas, palaces, and smaller temples, as well as an array of stelae, or carved stone monuments, that provide valuable insights into Maya history and culture.
