About this spot
Commonly shortened to just Whitwell Station, it closed back in 1959 having been open since 1882 as part of the Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway. It suffered from dwindling use, and remained open for freight use until closing completely in 1964.
After the track was lifted, the remaining trackbed became part of the Marriot's Way footpath in '93.
Today, the station is being restored back to a period look and feel with museum and train rides available on a short length of track that's been laid next to the original route.
