About this spot
The White tower is one of Thessaloniki's landmarks. It is 23 m wide and 34 m high. It was built in the 15th century and has played a number of roles throughout the years. The name comes from Nathan Guiledi who whitewashed the tower in exchange of his freedom. The Ottomans have been using the tower to fortify the city's fortress. In 1880, in his book on the city’s monuments the historian Mihail Xatzi Ioannou called it the Bastille of Thessaloniki, where those condemned to death were slaughtered on its terrace and their blood dyed its walls red, as a cannon shot from the western part of the city signified that the death sentence had been carried out.

If you wish to enter, there is an entrance fee. You can go to the top of the tower but it is usually closed for the best time of the day. You do not need to pay to photograph outside the tower.
