About this spot
Urnes Stave Church is the oldest stave church in Norway, being build about 1130. Reportedly, the church's interior is the most highly decorated of all the remaining 28 stave churches in Norway. The church is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Three previous churches stood on this site prior to the current one being built in 1130. However, some of the interior decorations, in particular the northern wall, remain from the third church.
