About this spot
The Torresotto or Porta Nova gate belongs to the second ring of walls around the old city center of Bologna. One of the 18 gates in the “Circle of the Thousand,” it was completed in 1192 and under the main arch you can still see the remains of the pivots on which the large doors stood to protect the city center. The gate opens to the Piazza Malpighi with the Colonna dell’Immacolata and the Basilica di San Francesco beyond.

The city grew so quickly that a larger circle was built. Once the “Circla” was completed, the Porta Nova became the site of private homes.
