The University of Bologna can be found between Via Zamboni, Via San Vitale and Via delle Belli Arti. It is the oldest university in Europe (1088) and ranked the number one university in Italy. The school had a major role in the development of medieval Roman law. Over 90,000 students, from around the world, attend the university which has hundreds of degree programs with Schools in Agriculture, Economics, Engineering and Architecture, Foreign Languages and Literature, Law, Arts and Humanities, Medicine, Pharmacy, Political Sciences, Psychology and Education, and Sciences.

The district is diverse with churches, palaces, museums, bookshops, cafès, and graffiti-painted porticos. The neighborhood caters to students with lots of eateries, bars, and pubs.

Famous students include Erasmus, Copernicus, several popes and cardinals, Enzo Ferrari, and Giorgio Armani.
