About this spot
Some 8 thousand years ago, when Mt. Mazama erupted and subsequently collapsed to form Crater Lake, a bed of ash fell atop the creeks and runoff surrounding the peak. The hot ash boiled the water, releasing steam into vents through the sediment. The ash around the vents hardened compared to their vicinity, and, as the rock eroded over time, giant pumice hoodoos were left standing.

Today, the Pinnacles Overlook is an excellent place to view a prime example of these scenic hoodoos that are scattered around the park. Since most tourists are distracted by the main attraction (Crater Lake) you can often enjoy the site without the majority of the crowds. A short, wheel-chair accessible trail leads to numerous view points and sections of this natural wonder.
