Situated in the heart of the ancient city of Bukhara, Uzbekistan, this imposing fortress has watched over the city for over a millennium. Its origins trace back to the 5th century, with successive rulers adding to its structure over the centuries, resulting in a complex of palaces, mosques, barracks, and courtyards.
Initially constructed in the middle of the first millennium, it remained the principal residence of Bukhara's rulers through 1920, when it was partially destroyed in an aerial attack by Russian forces.
While much of the Ark's former glory was lost in the blaze triggered by the bombardment, enough survives to provide a glimpse of the sumptuous lifestyle enjoyed by the Manghit emirs, the Ark's final inhabitants.
The Ark served as a symbol of power and authority, housing the ruling elite and serving as the seat of government for various dynasties that ruled over Bukhara.
