About this spot
Thanh Ha is one of the oldest pottery villages in Vietnam. The village earned recognition for their work when the Nguyen Dynasty commissioned decorative as well as useful articles for the palace at the Imperial City of Hue. It is located on the banks of Thu Bon River approximately 3 km west of Hoi An’s Old Town.

The village has been making pottery the traditional way for over 500 years. There are no molds here—everything is shaped by hand. It is a 2-person job. One user spins the turntable with their foot and the other creates the shape. Thanh Ha is small—about 30 households with over 100 employees. It is estimated they make 400,000 cups, jars, bowls, and pots per year.

The brown clay comes direct from the riverbeds of the Thu Bon River. After the clay is kneaded and shaped, the item is set out in the sun to dry. From there it heads to a wood stove where it is “fired” for 7-8 hours.
