About this spot
Teatro Comunale is an opera house overlooking the Piazza Verdi. The original wooden theater was destroyed by fire in 1745. A new building was later constructed on the site of the Bentivoglio Palazzo which was leveled by riots in 1507. The theater was inaugurated in 1763 with the new opera “Il Trionfo di Clelia” by Metastasio.

The Baroque-style interior has tiers of boxes that were formerly owned by titled families, each decorated with the family’s coat of arms. The theater was built in a “bell” shape instead of the customary “U-shape” to enhance acoustics. There are approximately 400 seats on the main floor with another 500 seats in four tiers of boxes.

In 2006, Bologna was recognized as a UNESCO City of Music for its contributions to classical music, opera and dance.
