About this spot
St. George Church is located in the northeastern part of North Macedonia near the town of Kumanovo. It was built in the 11th century during the Byzantine Empire's rule over the region and is considered one of the most important examples of Byzantine architecture in Macedonia, particularly for its decorative art. The church features a cross-in-square plan with a dome and four pillars, typical of Byzantine church design. Although only the walls of the facades, arches, and a small portion of the original frescoes remain, they are a testament to the church's once-lavish decoration. Some of the surviving frescoes date back to the 12th and 13th centuries and depict scenes from the New Testament and the lives of saints. St. George Church was declared a cultural monument of North Macedonia in 1950 and underwent significant restoration work in the following decades. Today, it is open to visitors and is a popular destination for tourists interested in medieval art and architecture.
