About this spot
St Andrew’s Church, South Lopham

The village of South Lopham is on the Thetford to Diss road (A1066). The church is to the north of the main road on the road to Kenninghall and Attleborough.
The church tower is a notable landmark as it is the largest Norman church tower in East
Anglia. The tower was built by William Bigod as an addition to an existing Saxon building. The Bigods were supporters of William the Conqueror and also built castles such as those at Framlingham and Bungay in Suffolk. The tower was probably built in about 1100 CE. The tower is about 70ft (22M) high.
The parish chest could be 12th century. These chests were for the storage of documents and valuables so is fairly common to see three hasps for three locks - one each for the rector and the two churchwardens meaning the chest could only be opened if all three people are present.
As might be expected, there are additions to the church from every century to the present day.
