About this spot
Canyon de Chelly is a Native American Historical location with a National Monument designation. It has been continuously inhabited for over 5000 years. Today the canyon is still cultivated with small farms and the Navajo people raise cattle. Entrance is controlled and certain areas are off limits.
Canyon de Chelly's most iconic geologic feature is Spider Rock, a 750-foot tall sandstone spire. Access to the spire itself is not available without a Navajo guide, but the viewpoint from the canyon rim is definitely worth shooting.
The canyon rim is encircled by a paved road with many over looks and short trails to the rim. Entrance to the canyon floor may be accessed at certain points. Overlooks have varying degrees of access and some can be rough dirt, rocky surfaces.
