About this spot
South Slough, an arm of Coos Bay, was the first estuary in what is now a national network of estuarine preserves. The preserves, now found in almost every coastal state in the country, were established to further our knowledge of estuaries and coastal wetlands. Estuaries are the places where rivers meet the ocean, and the fresh and salt water mix.

At South Slough, walking and canoe/kayak trails enable visitors to explore the flora and fauna of forests, salt marshes, mudflats and estuary channels.
