A permit is required to hike at this spot. Permits for up to a maximum of 20 people per day are give for the South Coyote Buttes area (which includes both Paw Hole and Cottonwood Cove). Half the permits are available four months in advance on a first-come, first-serve basis from the Recreation.gov website. The other half are available daily through an online lottery the day before the visit.

The area is very isolated and may be unsafe during inclement weather conditions. Additionally, the roads to Cottonwood may be impassable, even with a 4-wheel drive, when wet.

About this spot
The Cottonwood Cove area of South Coyote Buttes is chock full of colorful rock formations. The Control Tower, also known as Dali Rock, is unusually shaped hoodoo within the heart of the South Coyote Buttes. The spot is within the Coyote Buttes South permit area and a permit is required to visit.
