About this spot
Sankt Laurentii Church (or the Sandy Church) is located approx. 4 kilometres southwest of the center of Skagen, in the plantation area east of the main road. The church was probably built at the end of the 14th century. At the time, the church was the largest in Vendsyssel. The church tower is probably a later addition, built around the year 1500.

At the beginning of the sand migration in the 16th century, it became increasingly difficult for the congregation to dig their way to the church for worship. The battle against the sand continued until 1795, when the church was closed down by order of King Christian 7. The nave was demolished and used in other construction projects, but the tower was spared and used as a sea mark.

Today the tower is listed, and after investigations in 1994, the location of the nave and sacristy is now marked in the terrain with red stakes. Faskiner marks where the old cemetery wall was. The sand-covered church is a much-visited tourist destination.
