Be respectful of the nuns that live and worship at the temple.

About this spot
Sangchhen Dorji Lhuendrup Lhakhang is a relatively new temple and nunnery (consecrated in 2010) sitting on a pine-covered ridge overlooking the Punakha and Wangduephodrang valleys below.

The complex is made up of the temple, a chorten and the nunnery. Inside the temple is a 14-foot bronze statue of Avalokiteshvara (the Bodhisattva of Compassion and patron deity of Tibet). The golden Chorten on top resembles the Boudhanath Stupa of Nepal.

The nunnery has 70 rooms which can accommodate approximately 120 nuns. The school not only has religious training, but teaches life skills such as embroidery, statue making and thangka (scroll painting).

The nuns here follow the Kagyu tradition—one of the four major schools that focuses on meditation practice. Women shave their heads indicating they have renounced their ordinary lives. A high percentage of girls become nuns because their parents could not afford to send them to school. Others join because they want to follow a Buddhist spiritual path. Nuns play a crucial role in preserving Bhutan’s traditions and culture.
