About this spot
The parish church on Gora is dedicated to Our Lady of the Snows. It stands above the village of Petrinci, and there is a cemetery around the church, where you can find a monument to Magdalena Gornik (1835-1896).

Magdalena Gornik was born on 19 July 1835, the third of seven children of a simple peasant family in the hamlet of Janeži, and was baptised on the same day in the Church of Our Lady of the Snows in Gora nad Sodražico. "Little Magdalena was a very ordinary girl. She liked to help her parents with their work, she was kind and affectionate to people. She liked to be in the company of her peers. Even as a child, she cultivated a special love and respect for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament." God intervened in her life in a special way in the spring of 1847. Her mother sent her out to the fields to feed the pigs. When she arrived near the field, she saw an unknown woman in front of her, who, after a cordial conversation, introduced herself to her as the mother of Jesus and the mother of all people. She instructed her to love Jesus as much as she could and to give Him every work. On the day of her First Communion, Jesus made her feel a part of his love. Her physical strength began to weaken, but she felt Jesus' closeness more and more strongly. In 1847, she began to attend Sunday School, but became so ill that she had to stay in bed. No medicine could help her. In August 1848, however, she was miraculously healed by a second apparition of Mary. Mary promised her that if she trusted in God, she would receive everything from Him, including food for her life. From then on, for the rest of her life, Magdalene did not eat any physical food, but fed on the mysterious heavenly food.

In 1867, Magdalena and her two sisters moved to Bloke to the parish priest John Kapleneku, where they remained until his death in 1863. Mystical phenomena (stigmata, miraculous meal, mystical communion) were still seen and shook people. She suffered a lot in the strays, but she loved to take all the suffering upon herself for the salvation of souls. In 1893 she moved back to the mountain and on 23 February 1896 she died in the hearing of holiness. In his letter (probably to Bishop Jeglič), the priest who buried Magdalene, Dominik Janež, wrote a prayer: 'Rest in peace, dear Magdalene! You suffered here with Christ, you were nailed to the cross, surely you are already rejoicing in the holy heavens. Pray for us that we too may suffer as willingly as you did, that we too may adore the Holy Body of the Saviour as much, that we may glorify the Virgin Mary as much as you did." Her tomb is visited by more and more people every year. This is a request that Magdalena Gornik, "forgotten" by the people, may also obtain the official recognition of sainthood, which, as we can be sure, she has already obtained from God.
