About this spot
The Roubaix Gate is also known as Porte Saint-Maurice and is part of the city's old fortifications and dates back to the 17th century. It was originally built as a part of Lille's defensive walls during the Spanish rule. The gate is named after Saint Maurice, the patron saint of soldiers, and served as an entrance to the city for those coming from the direction of Douai.

The architectural style of Porte Saint-Maurice is characterized by its defensive features, such as its imposing structure and thick walls. The gate is made of brick and stone and has a Renaissance-style façade. It features arched passageways with heavy wooden doors that could be closed to protect the city in times of conflict.

Over the years, the fortifications surrounding Lille were gradually dismantled, but Porte Saint-Maurice was spared destruction. Today, it stands as a testament to the city's history and serves as a reminder of Lille's fortifications.
