About this spot
Roskilde Cathedral is the cathedral in Roskilde. The cathedral is among the most important church buildings in Denmark and one of the most important monuments at all because of its unique architecture and as a burial church for Denmark's royal family. The cathedral is the Nordic region's first Gothic building and one of the first brick churches built around the year 1200, but today contains architectural styles from a period of 800 years. The cathedral has been the burial church of the royal family for centuries and contains 40 royal tombs (37 known and 3 attributed). Together with the church's frescoes and art, Roskilde Cathedral tells the history of the kings, the church and Denmark over 1000 years. In 1995, the cathedral was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.
