About this spot
The Tyne Swing Bridge is a grade ii listed structure that is thought to sit on the site of the original Roman crossing over the Tyne.
The swing bridge we now see was opened in 1876, and at the time, it was the largest swing bridge built. The swinging mechanism is hydraulically operated. It only opens occasionally these days.
