About this spot
The Presidential Palace is the official residence of the President of Vietnam. Construction began in 1900 and is very “European.” It was originally built to house the French governor-general of Indochina. The palace stands behind wrought iron gates flanked by sentry boxes. From the time it was completed to the Successful Revolution of 1945, there were 29 Governor-Generals who lived and worked there.

The three-story building has 30 rooms—each designed in a different style. It was ranked 6th on the list of Top 13 Most Beautiful Presidential Palaces in the World by Architectural Digest in 2017.

When Ho Chi Minh became president, he refused to live in the grand structure while his people were homeless and starving. However, he still received state guests there. Instead, he lived on the grounds in a traditional Vietnamese stilt house that he had built.
