About this spot
The city of Montpellier loses its title of capital of Languedoc after the Revolution. The department of Hérault was created at this time. The Prefecture then replaced the Intendance of Languedoc.

The Prefecture moved into a mansion built in the historic center of Montpellier in 1686 for the Countess of Ganges. These buildings are typical of late 19th century architecture. Some of these facades are listed historical monuments.

Around 1860, the Mayor of the city, Mr. Pagézy, decided to create a road to connect Peyrou to the Esplanade and which would serve the Prefecture. At the same time, a new building will be built attached to the old Ganges hotel.
