About this spot
The bridge was opened to traffic in 2013. The Dutch name "Oversteek" translates to the "Crossing" in memory of the soldiers who liberated the Netherlands crossing the river Waal at the end of World War II. There are 48 pairs of lanterns on the bridge that represent the 48 soldiers who lost their lives here, and every evening they turn on sequentially from south to north at the speed of the marching troops. Also every evening a veteran soldier marches across the bridge to conmemorate this historical fact.
