About this spot
Otaru was was the most important port city in Hokkaido back when Hokkaido was still mostly unpopulated by the Japanese. It is now a large tourist destination famous for its fresh seafood, its canal, and its various crafts. Back when it was still a large and thriving port city, most of the boats buoys were made by glass blowers because plastic was not a readily available resource. The decedents of these glassblowers continue the craft by making glass art that is very popular with tourists. Music boxes are also a popular item that can be found in Otaru with the Otaru Music Box Museum being a must see location. Because it was a port city it dealt with foreigners thus you can see quite a few western building in the town.
