About this spot
The village of Oqaatsut (population of 30) was once an Inuit settlement, Dutch whaling station and trading post. The H8 Restaurant is one of the few places you can buy the Greenlandic National Dish of seal soup (Suaasat). The town is also known as Rodebay which translates to Red Bay. The name came from the fact the bay would turn red from all the slaughtered whales. You can walk through the village on your own or book excursions through the H8. There are patches of cotton grass scattered throughout town in the damper areas. You can't miss this grass--look for the cotton-wool balls on sticks. Oqaatsut has one hotel and hostel rooms are available. You can also camp on the outskirts of town. This is still an active fishing village so if you are lucky you might be able to photograph the fishermen bringing in the catch of the day. There is a very popular 20 kilometer hiking trail between Ilulissat and Oqaatsut. The trail is marked with orange dots so you can do it without a guide. The trail follows the coastline but be warned there is no cell phone service. The trail is also called "Cecilia" and is used for the annual Cecilialobet run. The settlement is the last place in Disko Bay where locals can hunt whales. Every year the community and government decides on local quotas for seal, minke whale, fin whale and porpoise.
