About this spot
The sunken church at Mavrovo Lake, North Macedonia, is an iconic and somewhat eerie landmark that captures the attention of visitors and photographers alike. Officially known as the Church of St. Nicholas, it was originally built in 1850 in the old village of Mavrovo. However, in the 1950s, the construction of the Mavrovo Dam led to the creation of the artificial Mavrovo Lake, which subsequently submerged the village and the church.

This partially submerged church becomes particularly visible during periods of low water levels in the lake. The sight of its roof and walls emerging from the water creates a haunting and surreal scene, especially when contrasted with the stunning natural backdrop of the surrounding mountains and the Mavrovo National Park.
