About this spot
The Old Idaho Penitentiary operated from 1872 to 1973. The site contains 16 historic buildings as well as special exhibits including a collection of historic weaponry. The buildings include five cellhouses, a dining hall, a laundry, and a cooler with a solitary-confinement section known as Siberia. Cellhouse #5 includes the maximum security cells, death row, and the gallows. The Old Penitentiary is operated by the Idaho State Historical Society
