About this spot
Newcastle Cathedral (or, officially, Cathedral Church of St Nicholas) is the seat of the Bishop of Newcastle, as well as being the head church of the Diocese of Newcastle - the northernmost in England.
The original church was destroyed by fire in 1216, with the current building being completed in 1350. It was subsequently restored in the 1700's before being elevated to cathedral status in 1882. St. Nicholas is the patron saint of of sailors and boats.
