About this spot
The Gateshead Millennium Bridge links Gatesheads' arts quarter on the south bank to Newcastle's riverside paths on the north. Serving pedestrian and cycling traffic, it opened in 2001 and was the first tilting bridge to be built.
When it opens, the whole structure pivots, and the curved shape leads to the nickname of the blinking eye bridge.
