As this is an ancient sacred site, treat all areas with respect by not climbing on the marae and dressing modestly.

About this spot
The sacred area of Cape Matahira-i-te-ra'i is called Te Po - 'where the gods reside'. The site was already active by 1,000 AD and was the religious centre of the islands; a spiritual place of learning where priests and navigators from all over the Pacific would gather to offer sacrifices to the gods and share their knowledge of the universe and of ocean navigation.

It is a Unesco World Heritage Site. Restoration is in progress.
