About this spot
Liang Bua, often referred to as the "Hobbit Cave", is an archaeological site located on the Indonesian island of Flores, not far from Ruteng. It achieved international prominence in 2003 when the remains of a previously unknown hominid species, Homo floresiensis, were discovered there. These diminutive early human relatives, who have been affectionately dubbed "hobbits" due to their small stature, are believed to have lived on Flores as recently as 12,000 years ago, providing a fascinating glimpse into the island's prehistoric past. The cave itself is surrounded by lush vegetation and continues to be a site of scientific exploration, attracting researchers from around the world.
