About this spot
The Lamanai area is famous for its Mayan ruins, but it is also a great place to do birdwatching and photography. The land near the ruins is natural, preserved jungle, and most of the land bordering the New River is similarly undeveloped. Nearby are wetlands and agricultural fields with more birding opportunities. According to e-Bird, the Lamanai area provides the top two birding spots in Belize. More than 150 species frequent the area including: various raptors, toucans, egrets, herons, storks, kingfishers, woodpeckers, crakes, parrots, honeycreepers, and many more.
