About this spot
Lake Eyre, also known as Kati Thanda–Lake Eyre, is a large, shallow salt lake located in the deserts of central Australia. The lake is actually a series of interconnected salt pans, and is the lowest point in Australia, with an average depth of just 3 meters (10 feet) and a maximum depth of around 6 meters (20 feet). Despite its shallowness, the lake is considered to be the largest lake in Australia, with a total area of around 9,500 square kilometers (3,700 square miles).

The lake is located in a remote area of the country and is not easily accessible by road, with the nearest major town being William Creek, which is located around 150 kilometers (93 miles) to the east. However, it can be reached by plane or four-wheel drive vehicle.

The lake is usually dry, and fills with water only infrequently, usually as a result of heavy rainfall in the surrounding catchment area. When the lake does fill, it attracts a wide variety of birdlife, including pelicans, swans, and flamingos. The lake is also an important site for many species of fish and crustaceans, which have adapted to the harsh, salty conditions.

The traditional owners of the lake and surrounding area are the Arabana people, who have a long history of living in the region and have developed a deep understanding of its ecological systems. They have strong spiritual connections to the lake and its surroundings, and continue to rely on it for their cultural and economic well-being.

Lake Eyre is a unique and fascinating place, and is considered to be one of the most spectacular natural wonders of Australia. Its remoteness and harsh conditions make it a destination for only the most adventurous tourists, but those who do make the journey are rewarded with an unforgettable experience.
