About this spot
The construction of the Kortrijk Belfry began in the early 14th century, around 1307, and it was completed in the following decades. The purpose of building belfries during that time was to symbolize the city's independence and civic pride. Belfries were also used to store municipal charters, valuable documents, and to house the bells that rang out to alert the population of important events or dangers.

The Kortrijk Belfry is a remarkable example of Gothic architecture. It stands tall at around 70 meters (230 feet) and is adorned with various decorative elements. The tower's facade showcases pointed arches, ornate sculptures, and intricate stonework, reflecting the craftsmanship of its time.

The Kortrijk Belfry is part of a group of belfries in Belgium and northern France that have collectively been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
