About this spot
Katoghike Church is the smaller, older church on this spot. It has an interesting history, as it disappeared from existence for a few hundred years!
The church is thought to date back to 1264. After a large earthquake in 1679, a large basilica was built around the smaller medieval church and it remained somewhat disguised - until, during Soviet rule in 1936, the Basilica was pulled down to make way for residential buildings.

Efforts were made by archaeologists to preserve the freshly revealed old building, and more recently the new church, St. Anna, was completed in 2015.

The small Katoghike Church is now used as a prayer chapel.
