About this spot
The Kalyan Minaret of Bukhara, also known as the Great Minaret, is a towering masterpiece of Islamic architecture that has stood for over eight centuries as a symbol of Bukhara's rich cultural heritage. Constructed in the 12th century under the rule of the Karakhanid dynasty, the minaret reaches a height of around 47 meters (154 feet), making it one of the tallest of its kind in Central Asia. Its elegant design, characterised by intricate brickwork and geometric patterns, exemplifies the skill and craftsmanship of the artisans of the time.

Originally built as part of the Po-i-Kalyan complex, which includes a mosque and a madrasa, the Kalyan Minaret has served not only as a minaret for the call to prayer but also as a beacon of faith and a symbol of power and prestige. Despite enduring numerous earthquakes and invasions over the centuries, the minaret has remained largely intact, a testament to the durability of its construction and the ingenuity of its builders.

Today, the Kalyan Minaret continues to draw visitors from around the world, who come to admire its architectural splendor and learn about its fascinating history. Standing proudly amidst the bustling streets of Bukhara's old city, the minaret serves as a reminder of the city's ancient past and its enduring commitment to preserving its cultural legacy for generations to come.
