About this spot
The health resort of Manderscheid is particularly famous for two medieval castle ruins, Upper and Lower Castles of Manderscheid, which stand directly opposite each other on steep mountain spurs not far from the town's streets. From this look-out you'll have great views of both.
The once massive complexes, which were destroyed 17th c, are separated by the small river Lieser, curving through the densely wooded rocky landscape in the valley. Both served as defensive fortifications. Hostility ran deep between those on either side of the valley.
