About this spot
Joffre Lakes is a 6.8 mile one way, heavily trafficked out and back trail that features a lake and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking, running, camping, and snowshoeing and is accessible year-round with an elevation gain of 2,887 feet. A highlight of the park is the turquoise blue waters of Lower, Middle and Upper Joffre lakes, all three of which are located along the trail, and each more stunning than the last. Their striking, saturated blue color is caused by “rock flour” – or glacial silt – that is suspended in the water and reflects green and blue wavelengths of sunlight. Once you reach the upper Joffre Lakes you'll see the source of all that water... the Matier Glacier.
