About this spot
Jakar Dzong (Fortress of the White Bird) is located in Bumthang’s Chamkhar Valley. The name references the legend of a roosting white bird signaling the location on which to build a monastery. The fortress was built in 1549, by Lam Nagi Wangchuck and played a major role in the defense of the eastern districts. The dzong has two unique features—a 50 meters high central tower and a protected water source.

The original temple was small, but after several expansions it became one of the largest dzongs in Bhutan (1500 meters). The dzong houses administrative and religious offices, an assembly hall, and living quarters for the monks.
