About this spot
Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta is the largest mosque in Southeast Asia and the ninth largest mosque in the world in terms of worshipper capacity. It was built to commemorate Indonesian independence, and was named "Istiqlal", an Arabic word for "independence". The mosque was designed by Frederich Silaban, a Christian architect from North Sumatra, and took 17 years to build. It was officially opened in 1978.
