About this spot
Plaza Independencia is the most important city square in Montevideo, Uruguay, laid out in the 19th century in the area occupied by the Citadel of Montevideo. In its centre is a monument to General José Gervasio Artigas, and below it, his mausoleum.

There are a number of hills on the North shore of the river Plate and the Spanish numbered them. Thus the name of the city. Monte (hill), VI (sixth), de (counting from), O(este)(the west).
