About this spot
Ilulissat is the gateway to Disko Bay and sits 295 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle. The Ilulissat Icefjord was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2004. Walking is a good way to get around. Town is full of colorful buildings that date back to the 1700s. At one time the colors indicated the function of the building. Ilulissat is compact and walking allows you to wander the streets where you catch glimpses of local life. Scattered around the area are several "kennels" for sled dogs and you may see puppies running around town. Accommodations range from a 4-star hotel located right on the bay to guesthouses, apartments and individual rooms in private homes. WiFi is generally available. There is a limited availability of rooms so reserve early. From Ilulissat, you can book several excursions which include Disko Bay, a couple of neighboring villages, Disko Island, and Sermeq Kujalleq (Jakobshavn Glacier). Ilulissat is also the starting point for several hikes including Sermermiut and the Yellow, Blue and Red Trails.
