About this spot
Ilimanaq is across the mouth of the Icefjord from Ilulissat. There is a luxury lodge in town (15 cabins) with large windows and balcony views overlooking Disko Bay. It is also possible to camp anywhere on the outskirts of town. The village is small, approximately 50 residents, and has some of the oldest buildings in Greenland. On the trip out you will motor past hundreds, if not thousands, of icebergs. If you are a hiker, you can head into the backcountry for views of the icebergs and wildlife. Excursions, guided by locals, are also available for the more adventurous. There were several sled dogs living in the village. In parts of Greenland, it is illegal to import dogs to ensure the purity of the breed. These dogs are able to cross difficult terrain, are known for their endurance and can live outside in the arctic weather. In winters past, sleds were the primary mode of transportation in remote villages. Sadly, sleds and dogs are being replaced today with snowmobiles and UTVs.
